Family therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps family members communicate better and work through conflict together. If you are thinking about it, here is what a typical process looks like.
What is family therapy?
In family therapy, a licensed therapist works with a family (or part of one) to improve strained relationships. It can involve parents and children, partners, siblings, or other relatives. The focus is on the patterns between people, not on blaming one person.
When can it help?
Families often come in because of:
- Frequent arguments or tension at home
- Conflict between parents and children or teens
- Major changes such as a move, separation, or loss
- The impact of a family member’s mental health or stress on everyone else
Family therapy often works alongside individual care. A teen or adult can keep seeing their own therapist while the family attends sessions together.
What happens in a session?
Sessions usually last about 50 minutes to an hour. Several family members may attend together, or sometimes one person comes alone. The therapist helps the family look at roles and rules, how problems get solved, and the strengths the family already has. You may practice new ways to listen and respond between sessions.
How long does it take?
Family therapy is usually short-term. Many families attend around a dozen sessions, but the right number depends on your situation and your therapist’s recommendation. It does not make conflict disappear overnight. The goal is better understanding and coping skills that last after therapy ends.
How to get ready
- Think about what you would like to be different at home
- Agree that the goal is working together, not finding someone to blame
- Ask who should attend the first session; the therapist can guide you
