Compassionate Mental Health Counseling & Therapy — Serving Nationwide

Sadness is a normal response to loss, disappointment, or stress, and it usually eases with time. Depression is different: it is a medical condition in which low mood or loss of interest lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks and begins to interfere with daily life. If you are unsure which one you are dealing with, the length, intensity, and impact of your symptoms are the clearest clues.

What sadness looks like

Sadness usually has a cause you can name, such as a breakup, a hard week at work, or a loss. It comes in waves, you can still enjoy moments of your day, and it gradually lightens as circumstances change or you feel supported.

What depression looks like

The National Institute of Mental Health describes depression as a serious but treatable mood disorder that affects how you feel, think, and handle daily activities like sleeping, eating, or working. Common signs include:

Sadness is only one small part of depression, and some people do not feel very sad at all. They may feel numb, irritable, or exhausted instead.

Key differences at a glance

Duration. Sadness passes within days or a short time. Depression symptoms last most of the day, nearly every day, for two weeks or more.

Intensity. Sadness is usually proportionate to what happened. Depression can feel heavy even without an obvious reason.

Daily life. With sadness you can usually keep going. With depression, work, school, relationships, and self-care start to suffer.

Self-worth. Sadness rarely changes how you see yourself. Depression often brings guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness.

When to reach out for help

Consider talking with a therapist or your doctor if symptoms last two weeks or more, if they are getting in the way of your daily life, or if you notice that things you once enjoyed no longer feel good. A health professional can also rule out medical causes such as thyroid problems. You do not need to wait until things feel unbearable.

How therapy helps

Psychotherapy teaches new ways of thinking and responding to difficult emotions and is a well-established treatment for depression. At Footprints, our bilingual therapists offer depression therapy in English and Spanish, in person and by telehealth. Depression and anxiety often occur together, so we also support clients through anxiety and panic disorder therapy.

Frequently asked questions

Can sadness turn into depression?
Sometimes. If a low mood does not lift after a couple of weeks, keeps getting heavier, or starts disrupting your routine, it is worth talking to a professional.

Can you be depressed without feeling sad?
Yes. Some people mainly feel empty, irritable, tired, or uninterested in life, or notice physical symptoms like aches and sleep changes.

How long does depression last without treatment?
It varies. Depression can last months or longer if untreated, but it responds well to treatment, and many people feel better with therapy, medication, or both.

Is depression a sign of weakness?
No. Depression is a medical condition with biological, psychological, and life-event factors. It is not a character flaw.
